Energy Magnets and Vampires:
Protecting Mental Capital in Global Advocacy
This week, Strategy Table Co-Founders Tahira Endean and Anthony Vade are honored to attend the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) in New York as part of a delegation from the Grae Matta Foundation. The relentless pursuit of systemic justice, legal equity, and organizational transformation is highly demanding, requiring immense reserves of cognitive and emotional capital from those leading the charge. Within high-stakes professional environments, we encounter “energy magnets”, practices, spaces, and relationships that invigorate and restore mental acuity, and “energy vampires”, dynamics, inefficient processes, and toxic behaviors that rapidly deplete focus and induce severe burnout. Identifying and ruthlessly managing these forces is a strategic imperative for long-term success.
My home industry, professional event and planning, consistently ranked among the most stressful professions globally, provides a stark, empirical case study in the absolute necessity of rigorous energy management. Chronic stress inevitably leads to the catastrophic loss of institutional knowledge and critical talent. Modern leaders must move far beyond simply acknowledging burnout; we must actively implement mandatory recovery times and integrate restorative practices directly into the operational rhythm of our organizations. Passive entertainment, such as endless digital scrolling on smartphones, often functions as a subtle energy vampire, exacerbating the “dopamine challenge” and drastically reducing the capacity for authentic, restorative human connection. I’ve seen the antidote to this firsthand in highly intentional environments like my Dovetail ‘Camp Tailwind’ experience, where the deliberate absence of Wi-Fi forces participants to disconnect from their devices, ultimately fostering much deeper, authentic human connections and conversations.
Organizations must actively and intentionally cultivate energy magnets through the implementation of robust, enforceable mental health policies and standards. By fiercely protecting internal human capital and prioritizing true integration over an elusive work-life balance, leaders ensure their teams possess the stamina required to navigate the complex structural barriers highlighted by international mandates like CSW70. Self-care and team support are not optional corporate benefits; they are the absolute bedrock of sustainable advocacy.
